Front Row Plex
UPDATE: For a version that works in Snow Leopard see this post
In response to a reader’s request here is a FrontRow Plugin for Plex. This is just an updated version of my Boxee Plugin. You should be able to use both together.
It is assumed that Plex lives in your /Applications folder.
Remember, that for it to appear you may need to restart FrontRow. That can be done by typing
killall Front\ Row
on the command line.

It works perfectly, unfortunately a popup window asking to allow incoming connections ruins the experience. Hope the folks at Plex fix it. Thanks again for a great and useful plugin!!!
Glad to help.
I’ve seen this work on a friends system but the one thing he can’t remember his where he put the plugin once he downloaded it. Where do I put this?!? I’ve tried placing the plugin and the plugins folder in a few places I thought might be logical, but nothing has worked so far. Mind sending me an e-mail on this?
Thanks!
Open the DMG and drag the appliance icon onto the plugins folder icon. You will have to authenticate as an admin but it should put it in the correct place. If it’s not working please let me know.
The path it should be putting it in is : /System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app/Contents/PlugIns
Well two things, any predictions for this years WWDC? This was just released, http://www.hulu.com/labs/hulu-desktop , I know people are already clamoring wanting a way for this thing to launch from front row.
Thanks
Oh yes please, make a version of this for Hulu Desktop – you will help me score major points with my wife if she can launch Hulu Desktop from the familiar Front Row interface. Yeah, I need the points. So, help a guy out?
1. I don’t really have any WWDC Predictions this year. I guess I should put up a post about it anyway.
2. I’ll try to get a plugin up soon for Hulu Desktop.
You are awesome….that is all.
I keep getting an error now when launching Plex, saying “Unable To Launch Plex”… any ideas? It seems to have started with the last Plex update. I just installed the Hulu plug-in and it works great… any ideas? Thanks!
I just tried the latest Plex update and it worked fine for me. Make sure that Plex is located in the system Applications folder (/Applications) otherwise the plugin won’t find it.
Hi,
Good job but it doesn’t work with Snow Leopard.
I hope it will be when you can upgrade your OS.
See ya
Antoine
Same issue here with the latest Plex update and the frequent (always?) appearance of the dreaded “Unable to Launch Plex” error.
Note that I’d periodically get this error before the latest Plex update, but now I get it always, or at least almost always.
I think it may be related to a too-quick timeout – typically when I get this error I need to quit or force quit to get back to the Finder, where I typically discover that Plex has indeed launched. The error usually comes up quite quickly (after 2-3 seconds?) which makes me think that this plugin is simply not waiting long enough for Plex to launch.
Please please please can we have an update? If you add a “Donations Accepted” button here I’d be happy to send you a few bucks – your plugins have made the Mac Mini HTPC MUCH more acceptable to my wife : )
@Antoine
Thanks for letting me know. I have a copy of Snow Leopard. I’ll see if I can get it to work.
@Cooper
I updated the plugin to have a longer timeout. Download and install again and see if that makes a difference. Also make sure you run the ‘killall Front\ Row’ command after you reinstall.
this is the error on SnowLeopard, hope it helps …

This may mean that an unexpected error has occurred, or that you do not have all of the dependencies for this bundle.
Seems to be working better – no “Unable to Launch Plex” errors since your update – will let you know soon how it goes with repeated use…
Neither the Plex nor the Boxee plugins are working for me in Snow Leopard 10.6.2. For what it’s worth, both plugins have the icon of a Microsoft plugin while the rest of the stuff in the plugin folder appear as folders.
Steve,
Make sure that you have my latest plugins for Snow Leopard which are available on the Front Row Plugins page. The original plugins don’t work in Snow Leopard.
