Front Row Hulu
UPDATE: For a version that works in Snow Leopard see this post
Hulu has released a desktop client called Hulu Desktop. I’ve had some requests to make a Front Row Plugin to support Hulu Desktop. Since Hulu is the main reason I started using Boxee and made my Front Row Boxee Plugin it only seemed right. So, here it is:
BEFORE you run this you should have at least run the Hulu Desktop once to accept their EULA. If you don’t the plugin will think it wasn’t able to launch Hulu Desktop. I would also suggest switching it to full screen mode.
Also, like with my other plugins it is assumed that Hulu Desktop lives in /Applications. Also like the others, it is recommended that you restart Front Row after installing the plugin by running
killall Front\ Row
at the command line.
This can be used along side my other Front Row plugins without conflict.

This is VERY cool, thank you!
Any idea how to force Hulu Desktop to start in fullscreen mode?
For fullscreen just run Hulu Desktop and then hit ⌘F ( or View->Fullscreen) and then Quit (⌘Q). When you run it again it should still be in fullscreen mode.
I am trying to run on a external monitor (TV). When I load up front row it shows on my external, then when I select “hulu” it reverts back to my primary display. Is there a setting I’m missing or possibly doing something wrong?
Hmm. How did you make Front Row show on the TV? Did you just make it the primary display? When I do that it changes where Hulu shows up as well. If the TV isn’t already your primary display try changing it and see if that fixes things.
Thanks, and yes, I know I can hit ⌘F but that kinda defeats the purpose of watching this from a couch, doesn’t it? I think most people will want to start it in fullscreen mode, and fully expect that this will be fixed in a future release of Hulu Desktop. I was just wondering if there was a way for the plugin to launch Hulu with the ⌘F keystroke (or command-line option) pre-selected.
Thank you so much for this!!!
I’m using TV Row to make Front Row show up on the TV. When I change the primary display under the display preferences, it works. I have a feeling its a thing with the Hulu Desktop software.
⌘F will put hulu desktop into fullscreen, when you exit in full screen it will continue to be full screen the next time you launch it.
EXCELLENT plug-ins i use ALL of them!
Thanks – makes my mac mini media server soooo simple to use and sooooo much more functional!
I can’t seem to find a Plug-Ins folder in in the Contents folder of Front Row. Can someone help me out?
Thanks for the great plug-in. I have noticed that sometimes when I exit the Hulu desktop application I end up back at the OS X desktop instead back in front row. Do you happen to know why this is happening? I am using OS X 10.5.7.
It seems that sometimes FrontRow crashes while the Hulu Desktop is running. So when you exit Hulu Desktop you just go back to the finder like you have seen. I don’t know why this happens.
How can I reorder the list? Like if I want Hulu to be at the top and music to be moved down to the bottom. Also we need a Pandora, youtube and nextflix plug-in. I wish someone would write apps for them.
Also, thanks for writing these. I have been looking for something like this for months! Much appreciated!!!
To reorder them you would need to change ‘FRAppliancePreferedOrderValue’ in the Info.plist of each plugin. I have a utility I’ve been working on to let you reorder them in an easier manner along with some other things. I don’t know if it will ever get finished.
This is really fantastic, is there any chance that you could make a plugin to start slingplayer in the same fashion? Then my media center would be complete!
Man you are a GOD! My Remote Buddy trial expired and I have find that the $19.99 price pointy is a little high for me just to simply start Hulu Desktop on my mac. So I was in a serious need for a good solution and than BAMMM! I find your plug-in via google.
Yaddi-yaddi-yadda… all I’m trying to say is: THANK YOU!
on your last post “Hulu Plugin for Snow Leopard & Leopard” that version wouldn’t work on my ppc emac running Leopard.
I did find the other one “Download FrontRowHulu”
under the Front Row Hulu post works perfectly !!!
So everone out there still using the old 1.25ghz emacs for movie viewing (or for the kids room) This one is the one to download.
Thanks sooooooooooooo much guys for your hard work
Have a safe and happy holiday!
